Counting the spawners

The counting took place the 8th - 9th of October, and showed promising results. Spawning fish were spotted throughout the entire river, and the goal of 3,5 tonnes of henfish was reached. This is the 5th year in a row we reach this goal.

A quick guide as to how to release fish

This article will give a brief picture-by-picture description as to how to properly release fish. So far it has been released about 35 % of the total catches, which we find to be quite good.

Top 10 - 20 kilos or bigger

Even though the total catches for this year's season har been poorer than last year's, we are very pleased with this year's top 10. All of these 10 fish har 20 kilos (44 lbs) or bigger. The biggest actually being estimated to weigh 24 kilos, or 53 lbs. Still there are a couple of weeks left of the season, and we're hoping that this list will improve even more.

Important message - new quota

Due to low catches, Lakselv land owners association has decided to introduce an extra ordinary quota for 2011. The quota for hen fish larger than 80 centimeters will from today, the 3rd of August, be a maximum of one -1- henfish per fisherman in Lakselva. Note that you can still catch three big salmon, but two of these must be cockfish.

The first contributions to this year's catch and release contest has just come in. It puzzles us that with this year's prizes has come in such few contributions, but where hoping this will change as the season progresses.

Great conditions in Lakselva

Since the flood a few weeks ago, the river has now reached a good water level, and conditions should be great for hooking the big one. The biggest catches are still to be reported, but we have started. Higher temperatures the last few days will hopefully lead to an increase in water temperature, thus causing more salmon to enter the river.

Scale samples in Lakselva

With a salmon farming industry moving continously forward, and expanding rapidly also in Finnmark, the focus on river management and a reasonable harvesting grows even bigger. With this in mind we will increase the focus on scale samples in 2011.

The season has started!

The salmon fishing season has now officially started in Lakselva, but quite a big flood made it's mark, and the opening itself became more or less an anti climax. A drive along the river at midnight confirmed this. Few fishermen, and those few I talked to found it best to watch the river from a distance.

A coming flood in Lakselva?

Lakselva has had quite a significant increase in the water level the last few days, but one can still not call the situation a spring flood. However, much snow is still left in the mountains, and the water level will continue to increase together with increasing temperatures.

Spring is in the air!

Sun and warmer temperatures have done their job, and the protecting layer of ice has now disappeared from Lakselva. The water lever has had a slight increase as well, and with that, also the expectations.

Season start within reach

Now it's only two months left till the season kicks off in Lakselva, and the count down has started. The Lakselva is still covered in ice, but the melting has barely started, and the last couple of weeks have had hints of spring in them.

New brochure

The new brochure is now ready in the Norwegian version, and the English version will be completed within the next couple of days. There is no major change in rules, but a couple of properties have been closed for public licenses. This you can see on the map in the Norwegian brochure. Stay tuned for more information in English.

I frequently receive requests from fishermen asking how the catches vary throughout the season. With a fairly good knowledge of the common salmon fanatic, I know that planning the trip is a vital part of the experience. I have gathered som statistics from the previous four seasons, and I hope this helps you plan your trip to Lakselva.

Licenses put on sale the 8th of March

The licenses for Lakselva will be put on sale the 8th of March, at 6 p.m Norwegian time. As previous years, we will sell the licenses online.

Season opening 2011

The salmon fishery in Lakselva will open on the 10th of June this year. So, if you are unsure of what to do this weekend, I hope I have helped you a little bit along the way. The first fishing licenses start at 6 p.m.

Direct flight to Lakselv

Norwegian has decided to start a direct flight from Oslo Airport - Gardermoen to Lakselv this summer. At first, the route is planned between the 27th of June - 12th of August. The flight will depart three times a week, mondays, wednesdays and fridays.

Happy new salmon year!

We have now entered the new year, and we can remember back on a great 2010-season. We hope and think we can copy this result also in the future, especially when the results of the last years successful spawning start returning. Also, allowing the real big fish to be released after being hooked makes a solid contribution, especially for the average weight.

The polar night

The polar night has lasted for about a month, but there's only 8 days left till winter solstice, and from there on, time will move swiftly towards a new season of salmon fishing in Lakselva. It's been a continuously cold period in Lakselva for quite a while, and pretty much all of the river is covered in ice. This is important for the fish in the river, and we're hoping this will lead to a strong class of '11 in Lakselva.

Names along the Lakselva

The Lakselva valley is of a "Kven" heritage, and a project has now been launched to name the different fishing spots in the river with the correct "Kven" names. Hopefully this will help the fishermen when, both when it comes to finding their way around, but also help the fishermen explaing to their friends where they caught the 28 pounder.

Season reflections

2010 has been a truly remarkable year in Lakselva, and not since 1992 has there been caught so many kilos of fish in this beautiful river. The fishermen, both locals and visitors has had some great experiences, and the number of big salmon has made it a really pleasurable season.

Record season in 2010?

The season in Lakselva has so far proven to be very good, and especially the last two weeks has been very good. Both grilse and big salmon are caught at the moment, and if you take a brief look at the catch statistics for the season so far, there is already a whopping 6 fish weighing in at 44 pounds or more (20 kilos).

Season best - 52 pounds!

This morning, the 7th of July, a tired, yet happy fisherman entered my office with the tale of a big fish he had caught. He estimated it to be in the area of 40 pounds. When we got to the river and had it weighed it was an amazing 52 pounds!

Fresh salmon in the river

Observations has been made of fresh salmon in the river, but there's yet to be reported any catches of big salmon. The reports has come from zone 1, but many things point to the fact that this is salmon on the move upward the river.

Counting spawning females

Every fall, after the fishing season, we count the amount of salmon left in the river. The goal of Lakselva is to have atlest 3,4 tons of spawning female salmon left. This is to make sure that the capacity of the river to produce future generations of fish is reached. Catching big numbers of salmon is of little interest if all of it is dragged ashore and killed.
