Lakselva (meaning salmon river) is known as one of the best salmon rivers in Norway. The biggest salmon of the season 2009 was a whopping 55 lbs. and a total of eight fishes weighing more than 40 lbs. The average weight of all salmon caught in 2009 was a little more than 13 pounds. Lakselva also claims to have some of the biggest grayling in the world.
Besides great fishing, Lakselva offers fishing in wonderful surroundings, and it's not many other places you can experience catching an Atlantic Salmon in the midnight sun.
Lakselv airport, Banak, is situated only a few feet from the river mouth, which makes it easy to access the river. This means that you can start fishing only about three hours after leaving Oslo airport, Gardermoen. If you leave London at noon, you might enter Lakselva only five hours later.
Lakselva is sectioned into different zones. These zones has a limit for sold fishing permits. This helps ease the fishing pressure on the river, as well as it leaves the fisherman with a greater feeling of being alone and fishing exclusively. Please note that there are local fishermen as well, but seeing that the river has so many great stretches, there is plenty for everyone. The best salmon zones are zones one to four. In the lakes and further upstream you will find big grayling. In fact, the biggest grayling caught in 2007 weighed 5,3 lbs.
Rules regarding quotas, fishing gear and other factors affecting the fishing will be publicized during march 2010. Note that the rules are similar for both local fishermen as well as visitors. Fishing permits will be put on sale shortly after the release of the fishing rules.
